For those who sacrificed so much for peace, the quiet estuary of Mallacoota is a fitting repose.
Bert Egan walks down the main street of Eden underneath the ver andahs of butchers and drapers’ shops. He is an old man, bespectacled and red faced. He wears a gaberdine overcoat, a straw hat and carries a shooting stick.
Bert runs the Eden museum which houses the relics of the whaling and fishing industry of Eden’s early years. He has been here 86 years and worked in the bush breaking horses and carting fence posts and sleepers
