For all drivers it was as much an adventure as a sport. Peter Brock announced it to be the best motor event he’d been in and everyone had anecdotes to tell which had very little to do with pistons and fuel pumps.

All of us who read this magazine have a fair idea what drives ma­chines on, but it is a far more difficult study to find what drives a man on.

Genoa Gorge

Ever since I had read reports of the Genoa River Gorge by the late Norman Wakefield, I had wanted to visit the gorge myself. Norman Wakefield, naturalist, archeaologist and plain adventurer had walked the Genoa River and it was here that he had found the footprints of a prehis­toric animal. These prints were later cut from the river bed and carried out by helicopter. It’s uncertain how far Wakefield came down the river, but we decided to come in from Yambulla Creek and walk down to Wangarabelle, a distance of 25 kilometres in a straight line and God knows how long as the river winds its way through the gorge. Unsaid in everyone’s mind was the hope that we might find some perhistoric prints in some remote part of the gorge.
