Green Cape Lighthouse

Southern Lights

There is something about lighthouses. They are always bleak and forbidding places as a result of their placement upon the edge of lands thrust into the brunt of the wild oceans.

Yet they hold a romantic thrall. Their feet are littered by the wrecks of craft which caused these huge monoliths to be placed where they are.

Gabo Island is a rather bleak and tussocky place, battered by the worst of bad Bass Strait weather. At one time this island was linked to the mainland by a thin strip of sand, and one of the workmen who lived on the mainland, but worked on the island, at times had to keep repairĀing the sand bridge so that he could get to work.
