A more recent ruin and its runes — Bittangabee.

Who Discovered Australia?

At Bittangabee Bay, on the far south coast, there are the remains of an unfinished stone building. The stone was taken from around the site and the mortar comprised sand and a lime created from crushed sea shells.

Historians, anxious to pre date the discovery of Australia, have argued that these remains are those of a variety of ancient peoples.

An Egyptian dhow, found at Woollongong, provided some historians with a clue that these Bittangabee ruins might have been an attempt at providing a wintering station for Egyptians who were looking for Antarctica.
