Jack watched the girl as he drank the tea and ate the chunk of cold damper. A baby cried and they both looked towards their shack. The girl silently went to the lean-to and brought out a squalling black child. “Bin da binda, Nargalilly”, crooned the mother as she returned to her man, who watched both carefully. He finished the tea and looked back beyond the farm to the blue ranges which sloped down into the sea. Birrawong followed his gaze and said quietly, “Murrang man cornin’ Jack”.
