The dog scratched and clawed, whining miserably and burrowing deeper into the hard flinty ground. The dog stopped and sat whining, whining between his teeth, and watched as the man’s mouth opened to call him, but then shut. How many times had he called the dog to fetch the axe and how many times had the dog brought back sticks only to be sent away — and the dog in his frustration and misery bit at the trees and clawed at the ground but could not understand.
