Each of the killer whales was familiar to the whalers and each of them was given a name. Old Tom was a particularly intelligent beast and he was the last of the bunch to die. A tourist asks at this point how old Tom died and Bert halts for the first time and looks slowly around. There is a strange light in his eye as he replies “old age and hung­er. You’get too old and too slow and everything gets away from you. You don’t eat and then you die. Tom was 140 years’ old. It was his time to die”.
