A Corner full of Characters,Love of Mallacoota

In fact, last century a very beautiful woman resided within these walls. Henry Lawson, Australia’s great poet and story teller, was ‘drying out’ in Mallacoota at the time, and on one of his journeys he met this young woman and although they only passed the normal greetings, he wrote to her several times and as is the susceptibility of great hearts, fell in love.

One day Lawson and a local fisherman from Mallacoota sailed a small ketch from Mallacoota to Eden and Lawson stood up on the bow and waved as they passed the Green Cape light. He wrote a poem called “Did You See Us Sailing Past?” which was dedicated to that radiant female who lived on that bleak and desolate finger of stone in the sea.
