Bex and Abalone was written by John Wood-Ingram who is one of the three song writers for Mama Hot. John is probably the catalyst be­hind the success of the group although he prefers to suggest that it has developed out of the need for entertainment in the town and the abun­dance of local talent.

John’s play revolved around the local abalone fishing industry and most of his songs are gentle satires on town affairs. It’s hard to describe the style of music produced by John and his group. Some of their songs are heavy rock while others have a regae flavour and others are refresh­ingly original in style.
