With no formal building experience he drew up his own plans and began constructions with the aid of a couple of technical manuals on architecture.

The building which still stands on the shores of Twofold Bay, the deepest natural harbour in the southern hemisphere, was a lavish affair. The panelling was imported oak and the construction timbers were local­ly sawn Woolly Butt.

A huge conservatorium was located in the centre of the home and featured a lavish fountain surrounded by exotic vines and plants from all over the world.
